Cooper's Big Sleepover

With fourth of the July fireworks and Grandma T being out of town, her dog gets to hang out at the Trueblood place.

It's important to understand that he's an older dachshund and blind, so new places are a trouble for him to tackle. Even at Grandma T's place he still bumps into things and runs into walls.

Cooper is apprehensive about walking on the wood flooring. He takes it slow and cautiously
"Looking" out the window
Trying to get him settled on his familiar blanket
Getting his T-R-E-A-T
Taking Cooper for a potty break outside
Sleeping on my rug as I work
Tuckered out after a long day of sleeping and being in a strange new place
Getting "outside" smells!
After dinner, we hung out on the couch

At 0200 in the morning I woke up to realise that Cooper was up and freaking out. He was wandering around the common room shaking and nervous, so I laid with him for a while.

That didn't quite do the trick, so I moved him to the couch with the blanket and laid down for a couple hours with him, until like 0430.

Then when I got up in the morning, he was still comfortably in his spot on the couch. I laid back down in my spot and took a picture.

Cooper nestled into the couch

It seems he didn't like being alone on the floor! He'd get to trembling whenever left alone there for too long.

The next day we took him for a quick walkies!

Look at that happy dog!

That night I decided to let him sleep in the bed with me, and he kept burrowing his way down toward my feet. Again he woke me up early in the morning, but this time because he needed to go out.

Then... it was July the fourth, with all its dog-unfriendly explosions. He spent the whole time panting and freaking out, and he barked for the first time since we got him!

Grandma T was supposed to come flying home that night, but her flight got delayed, so I managed to stay with Cooper and keep him calm.

In the end we didn't get to bed until 0400 or so, and I left Cooper on the couch for the couple of hours that I managed to sleep. Then, again, he needed outside so I had to get up early in the morning to help him.

For July the fifth, we got up for good around 1100 and then went to In-N-Out for lunch, leaving Cooper at home comfy on the couch.

Grandma's flight got delayed again and so I spent the evening sitting tight with Cooper like this:

Attached at the hip, much?

I decided to let Cooper spend the night with me again, and this time he fared better. It was more familiar to him, and he passed out next to my knees and didn't move all night.

I got up at 0600 to head out to see family for the day, which left John in charge of Cooper's care.

Then, thankfully, Grandma T made it home and picked him up in the afternoon! That wrapped up Cooper's big sleepover – a much longer stay than we anticipated at first!
