After weathering several false starts with the lettuces, we managed to get a set going! Here's this month's progress.
First off, this lettuce wilted. Note how tiny the taproot isIt had snapped off on its own, sadly, which caused the wiltingMeanwhile our cucumbers took off and grew tall and started sending out their main leavesCheck out the root system for this lettuce – it made it into the water!
Meanwhile, over at Grandma's:
Lots of lettuce!Ruby red lettuce?More red lettuce!
After another week:
Bigger lettuces!
Then, back at the balcony garden:
Moved up some of the seedling lettuces! And the smallest cucumberUh oh, not again!Something tells me this radish isn't going to be very big...This one at least is the star of the planter boxUpdate on the lettuces: they're all coming in nowLook at how red this one is!
Then, quite a shocker hit:
See all those little white dots on the leaves? Those are insects!
The poor radishes were being sucked dry!
Even more insects! Our cucumber also had a little spot hereAfter brushing away all the insects, the radishes bounced back!Beautiful lettuce is still going fine, by the wayThen suddenly the radishes turned yellow and gave up. So I pulled up their roots and ate them!Delicious radishes!
That's all for this month. Stay tuned for next month, where I'll likely make a salad with these red lettuces!
